Breeder Stats Platform — Orivet v3 Rebuild

The Problem

A genetics-analytics SaaS product needed a full v3 rebuild — modern REST APIs, multi-region billing, a path off a legacy production database, and a new customer- and admin-facing web application — without downtime for breeders relying on the platform daily.

Architecture & Approach

Designed and built a Django REST Framework backend delivering 45+ endpoints across 6 domain modules (accounts, billing, catalog, stats, maf, common). Architected a strangler-fig migration using a custom Django database router that splits traffic across a new primary database, a read-only legacy production database, and an optional read replica — enabling zero-downtime migration off legacy infrastructure. Built a MySQL-backed cache-aside layer (7-day TTL) for expensive statistical aggregations, a deliberate cost-optimization that avoided introducing AWS Redshift. Implemented AWS Cognito JWT authentication (JWKS token verification) plus a custom API-key gateway middleware as a second security layer. Engineered a multi-region Stripe billing system — separate AU/USA merchant accounts via a provider/factory abstraction. Containerized with Docker and deployed to AWS ECS Fargate via an automated CI/CD pipeline (CodeBuild/CodePipeline) using immutable Git-SHA image tagging to ECR. Also built the platform's customer and admin frontend in Next.js — a backend-for-frontend layer that authenticates every request and proxies it to the API, translating between frontend and backend data conventions. Shipped the breeder-facing product: a multi-step registration and checkout wizard with multi-region Stripe billing, self-service subscription management, the Breed Health Intelligence statistics dashboards (disease, DNA, and trait statistics with plan-tier gating, saved views, and PDF/CSV export), a research-contribution workflow linking DNA results to real-world health outcomes, and admin tooling for managing users, plans, and payments — built on a Radix-based component library and a custom design system with light/dark themes.
